Couchpad is a remote control for Android TV and Google TV. It is built to keep everything on your iPhone and your home network. In short: Couchpad talks only to your TV, and the only thing it ever sends to the internet is an anonymous crash report if the app crashes or freezes.
What Couchpad does on your network
- Finding TVs. With your permission (iOS asks for Local Network access), Couchpad looks for Android TV and Google TV devices on your Wi-Fi using Bonjour. It sees their names and network identifiers.
- Controlling a TV. Couchpad connects directly to the TV you choose over an encrypted connection and sends key presses, text you type in the keyboard screen, and app links. The TV sends back its volume level and the name of the app on screen.
These connections stay inside your local network. Couchpad has no servers of its own.
Crash reports
If the App Store or TestFlight version of Couchpad crashes or stops responding, it sends a crash report to Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.), so the problem can be found and fixed. A report contains the technical details of the crash: the app version, the code that was running, the iPhone model, iOS version, free memory and similar device state, and a random install identifier.
A report does not contain your name, email, TV names or nicknames, anything you typed, pairing codes, keys or certificates, screenshots or a recording of the screen. IP addresses are not stored (Sentry's IP scrubbing is on). Reports are not linked to you, not used for advertising and not shared with anyone else. About one in ten sessions also sends performance timings for the same purpose.
What is stored on your iPhone
- The TVs you paired: their name, your nickname for them, network address and the fingerprint of their certificate.
- Your shortcuts, settings, and how often each app appeared on the TV (used only for the "Recommendations" list).
- A key that identifies your iPhone to your TVs. It is created on your iPhone, kept in the iOS Keychain for this device only, and never leaves it.
Text you type for the TV is sent to the TV and not stored. Pairing codes are not stored. Nothing above is shared with us or anyone else. Deleting the app deletes it all; "Forget TV" in Settings removes a single TV.
What Couchpad does not do
- No account or sign-in.
- No analytics, advertising or tracking. Crash reports (above) are the only data that leaves your iPhone.
- No use of your microphone, location, contacts or photos.
Links that leave the app
Rate, Share, Feature Requests, Contact Support and this policy open the App Store, the share sheet, your browser or your email app. What you do there is covered by those services' own policies. Feature requests are hosted on Canny; anything you post there is public.
Children
Couchpad collects no personal information from anyone, including children. Crash reports contain no personal information.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
